Setting up Notion and Notion MCP
Zhu Li uses Notion as its primary workspace for tracking issues, features, and roadmaps. To enable the full AI experience, you need to connect both Notion (for API access) and Notion MCP (for hosted AI tools).
Step 1: Connect Notion
The standard Notion connection allows Zhu Li to read and write to your workspace using the official Notion API.
- Log in to your Zhu Li dashboard.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Under the Notion Connection section, click Connect Notion.
- You will be redirected to Notion. Select the workspace you want to grant access to and click Allow access.
- Once redirected back, you should see "Connected to [Workspace Name]".
Step 2: Connect Notion MCP
Notion MCP is a hosted server that gives AI tools (like Zhu Li's chat agent) secure, optimized access to your workspace.
- In the Settings page, after connecting Notion, you will see a Connect Notion MCP button.
- Click it to start the MCP authorization flow.
- Select the same workspace and click Allow access.
- When finished, the status should show "Notion MCP connected".
Step 3: Workspace Bootstrapping
If this is a new workspace, Zhu Li may need to "bootstrap" it. This involves creating the necessary databases and structures for issues and features.
- Follow any on-screen prompts in the dashboard to initialize your workspace.
- Once bootstrapped, you'll see a green checkmark next to "Workspace bootstrapped".
Why connect both?
- Notion API: Used for background tasks, ingestion (from Git/iMessage), and structured data updates.
- Notion MCP: Used by the AI chat agent for real-time searching and interactive document generation.
